William Smith Jr. racked up dozens of felony charges throughout northeast Indiana a few years ago for cashing counterfeit payroll checks at area stores. In January 2008, Secret Service agents were contacted by police in Logansport about what they thought was a "significant criminal enterprise†involving fraudulent Indiana identification cards.
A search of Smith's Indianapolis apartment revealed 39 authentic Ohio birth certificates of deceased people and 34 Indiana ID cards, according to court documents. But all the identification cards bore Smith's picture, according to court documents. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles provided the Secret Service with information about 150 fraudulently obtained but genuine Indiana identification cards.
