United States Attorney Julia C. Dudley announced today that Latoya P. Steelman, age 26, of Roanoke, Virginia, was sentenced today in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke on charges related to her participation in a conspiracy to commit bank fraud. In all, members of the conspiracy allowed over $138,000 in fraudulent payroll checks to be deposited into their personal Bank of America checking accounts.
According the indictment, all five co-conspirators participated in a bank fraud scheme in which Latoya Steelman, Doris Steelman, Barnes and Lewis allowed counterfeit payroll checks to be deposited into their personal checking accounts by unindicted co-conspirators. The counterfeit payroll checks were drawn on the Citibank account of Manpower. After the checks were deposited, the unindicted co-conspirators would withdraw some of the funds, which would be split between members of the conspiracy.
