At least 7 people charged in check fraud scheme

Authorities are investigating a check fraud case that left several local business out of thousands of dollars. Police said fraudulent payroll checks that claim to be from Genie Temporary Services, 1255 Monmouth Blvd., and Derby Industries, 1033 Enterprise Ave., have been cashed at both Galesburg Hy-Vee stores. At least seven area people have been charged with forgery, and more arrests are expected. All those arrested told police they were approached by a man who asked if they wanted to make some extra money. He would then accompany them to Hy-Vee, where they would cash the phony payroll checks - $400 to $1,000 - then receive from $50 to $150.
