Former loan officer gets 57 months in fraud case

A former employee of an Ashland credit union was sentenced Monday in federal court for embezzling more than $165,000 from her employer. Crystal L. Smith, 36, of Greenup was sentenced to 57 months in prison by U.S. District Court Judge David L. Bunning for credit union fraud, bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, according to a statement from the office of U. S. Attorney James A. Zerhusen. Smith had pleaded guilty to the charges in March. She admitted she used her position as a loan officer at the Bluegrass Credit Union on Carter Avenue to create fraudulent loans over 18 months starting in October 2006.
