Investigators say they have uncovered evidence of a forgery ring in which fake payroll checks were printed in a van and cashed at businesses in the Columbia area. The Kershaw County Sheriff's Department has arrested three people in connection with the ring, but investigators say others might have been involved.
Inside the van, investigators found a computer, a printer, checks already made under the names of various businesses, a U.S. Treasury check, and stolen Social Security cards and birth certificates, Crawford said. Some checks investigators found were intended to look like city of Columbia checks, he said.
