National groups send out alert after W.Va. fraud
May 11, 2009
Total Loss:
$2 Million
A national group of state information officers is warning states about the type of fraudsters that scammed the West Virginia Auditor's office out of $2 million. The National Association of State Chief Information Officers' director Doug Robinson has asked members to watch out for bank account changes and for new account set-ups by vendors that receive large payments.
NASCIO's state partner organization, the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers, recently had learned "that a number of states have been potentially defrauded by an elaborate scheme involving ACH [Automated Clearing House] payments to certain vendors," according to an e-mail Robinson sent to members.
