Ex-Property Appraiser Pleads Guilty To Fraud

A 60-year-old former real estate appraiser pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to wire and bank fraud in a scheme that involved 55 properties and mortgages worth $29.2 million. Barry C. Westergom faces up to 30 years in federal prison and a fine of $1 million, according to United States Attorney A. Brian Albritton. According to court documents, Westergom participated in a scheme in which a co-conspirator, Juan Carlos Gonzalez, negotiated the purchase of higher-end houses and entered into contracts with the sellers and retained Westergom to appraise the properties.
