Total Loss:
$2 million
The multi-million dollar check fraud case that led to the conviction of a Rehoboth woman in federal court last week began as a routine check fraud case for a veteran Attleboro police detective. Detective Russell Castro began the investigation into Elaine Carvalho, 43, of Fairview Avenue, and arrested her earlier this year before contacting the U.S. Secret Service when he discovered Carvalho passed more than $2 million in bogus checks at banks and to other victims, Attleboro Detective Lt. John Otrando said.
