Woman falls victim to Craigslist check fraud
August 2, 2010
Total Loss:
$2,950
A woman lost $2,950 to a con artist posing as a daycare customer, according to a Clarksville Police report.
The victim, who was not identified, said a man from the United Kingdom e-mailed her in response to a Craigslist.org posting about her daycare, the report said. He told her he would be in Clarksville for a month on business, and was willing to pay $600 for childcare services for his daughter.
Later, he e-mailed her again saying a local hotel would not accept his UK credit card. He sent the victim a check on July 13 for $3,600 to cover both the daycare and his $2,950 hotel bill, asking her to pay him back the hotel money.
