December 14, 2010
Total Loss:
$15 million
Lenayia Denise Mayberry was charged with using a stranger’s checking account number to cash two checks Dec. 24, 2009, in Fruitport Township: one at the Wal-Mart store off Sherman Boulevard, one at the Meijer on Harvey Street. Police said Mayberry was a “recruit” in a widespread scheme. Grand Rapids authorities earlier this year said counterfeit check producers were responsible for a five-year scam that defrauded numerous local businesses and individuals of $10 million to $15 million.
