Winnipeg men charged in ATM scam

Total Loss:
$160,000
Two Winnipeg men have been arrested in an ATM scam that has cost local financial institutions more than $160,000. Winnipeg Police said its officers in the commercial crime unit have been working on an ATM fraud investigation since the fall, when they were alerted that individuals' debit card data was being stolen, with funds removed from individual accounts and fraudulent purchases being made. Police said the tampering occurred at stand-alone ATM machines, where an overlay device was placed over the machine's card slot. The overlay would electronically scan and record the card data and a tiny camera would record the customers entering their personal identification number (PIN) codes.
