A San Diego County judge sentenced an escaped federal prisoner to 75 years to life for killing a Hemet man, draining his bank account and encasing his body in a concrete egg.
In a plea deal, Thomas Jeffrey Brooks, 41, pleaded guilty to the 2008 murder of 80-year-old Edward Andrews as well as 13 counts of burglary. He faced 88 felony counts, including first-degree murder for financial gain, fraud, forgery, identity theft and burglary. If the case had gone to trial, prosecutors could have sought the death penalty.
An accomplice to the fraud, Arlo Elizarraraz, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years in prison for accessory to conspiracy.
