Colossal Toronto ATM scam busted
February 10, 2011
Total Loss:
$280,000
Five Toronto men were charged last week on 158 counts of operating a massive ATM scam in the Greater Toronto Area. The accused allegedly placed a skimming device at each ATM over the card-reading slot and attached a pinhole camera facing the PIN pad of the machine. The equipment was removed an hour or two after it had recorded the payment card information and the data was transferred to a computer reproducing counterfeit magnetic cards. At least 60 persons were victims of the fraud including one unnamed financial institution which lost $280,000.
