Longmont stable manager accused of writing 138K in bad checks

February 8, 2011
Total Loss: $138,000

A Longmont woman is under arrest after police say she wrote almost $138,000 in bad checks to more than a dozen people. Colleen Speno, 44, worked as a manager at several horse-boarding facilities in Boulder County, most recently at the Double Dove Ranch. According to an arrest affidavit, she solicited loans from her boarders, then wrote checks on closed bank accounts, checks with insufficient funds and stopped checks to repay them. Investigators also say she failed to pay employees and people providing services to the stables, including veterinarians and hay farmers.
