Elba businessman gets 58 months for bank fraud

A federal judge sentenced an Elba man who pleaded guilty to an elaborate $8 million check kiting scam to 58 months in federal prison on Wednesday. The 58-month sentence issued by U.S. District Judge William Keith Watkins fell below the non-binding federal sentencing guidelines of 78-to-97 months for the crime of bank fraud combined with the dollar amount of the victims’ losses.
