Tempe police announced 49 check fraud arrests Wednesday as part of a special investigation.
Operation Check Out, an eight-month cooperative effort by the Tempe Police Department, culminated in the arrests of 49 people on suspicion of participating in a major fraud scheme. Police may make additional arrests as the investigation continues, according to police reports.
Investigators caught the group members trying to cash forged checks at area Food City, Wal-Mart and 7-Eleven stores. Some of the fake checks were forged with account information from discarded mail, police reported.
