A father and son that own the Chicago based burger chain, Boston Blackie’s, are charged with ripping off nearly $2 million from two banks in a check kiting scam. The proprietors, Nick and Chris Giannis were arrested last week along with restaurant manager Andy Bakopoulos.
Nick Giannis and Bakopoulos are charged with defrauding Charter One Bank and Washington Mutual. In addition to this charge, Chris Giannis is charged with two counts of organizing a continuing financial crimes organization. Nick Giannis, the father, was arrested by US Customs and Border protection officers in Detroit while attempting to enter Canada. The restaurant owners are thought to be under intense economic pressure. The struggling restaurant filed for bankruptcy late last year.
